The zodiac divided into lunar mansions of 13 degrees 20 minutes each. The nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth fixes the whole dasha sequence, which is why it matters more than the sign.

Which nakshatra matters most in a chart?
The Moon's. It decides where the Vimshottari dasha sequence starts, and four of the eight guna milan kootas are read from it.
Why are there 27 and not 28?
Some traditions add Abhijit as a 28th, used in muhurat. The dasha system and guna milan both use 27, and so does this site.
How do I find my Moon nakshatra?
Cast your kundli from your birth date, time and place. The Moon moves through a nakshatra in about a day, so the birth time matters.
How this is calculated
Positions come from Skyfield and the JPL DE440s ephemeris, with our own Lahiri ayanamsa referred to the mean equinox of date. Every planet agrees with Swiss Ephemeris to under one arcsecond, and the lunar node to under a tenth of one. We publish that because nobody else in this market publishes theirs.

- Capitaine, Wallace and Chapront (2003), IAU 2006 precession. The precession expressions our Lahiri ayanamsa is carried forward with from its J2000 anchor.
- Positional Astronomy Centre, Kolkata. The India Meteorological Department office that publishes the Rashtriya Panchang, which defines the Lahiri ayanamsa.
- Swiss Ephemeris. The reference implementation we test against: under one arcsecond on every planet. It is used only in our test suite, never on this site.
