A good day in general is not a good day for you.
The panchang above is the sky, and it is the same sky for everyone in the country today. Whether a day is good for YOU depends on what it is doing to your Moon, your running period and the house the transit lands in. That is a birth chart question, not a calendar one.
- Your own strong and weak windows, dated, across the years ahead
- The running period and sub-period, dated to the day each one ends
- Which months to start things in and which to sit through, by area of life
- The transits that matter in your chart, separated from the ones that do not
10 written sections, 10 years forward, about 29 minutes to read. Written in five to ten minutes, in English or Hinglish, and emailed to you.
Not ready to spend Rs 258 on a site you found today?
You came for a date, not a sales page, and we have not earned anything from you yet. Start with the free reading: it describes what you are like, and you can tell immediately whether it is you.
Whichever you start with, the Rs 79 is credited, so the full reading is Rs 179 afterwards and the total is the same either way. A price we quote you never goes up.
Already bought the back-cast? It comes off the price, so yours is Rs 179 + GST and it is one tap in your reports.
Why the place changes the answer
Sunrise in Kolkata and sunrise in Mumbai are nearly an hour apart, and every one of the day divisions below is measured from local sunrise. A panchang that does not ask where you are is giving you somebody else's Rahu Kaal. That is also why the tithi at sunrise can differ between two Indian cities on the same date.
How Rahu Kaal is worked out
The time between sunrise and sunset is divided into eight equal parts and one of them is assigned to Rahu, by a fixed rule that depends on the weekday. Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal come from the same division. They move with sunrise, so they are different every day and different in every city.
How this is calculated
Positions come from Skyfield and the JPL DE440s ephemeris, with our own Lahiri ayanamsa referred to the mean equinox of date. Every planet agrees with Swiss Ephemeris to under one arcsecond, and the lunar node to under a tenth of one. We publish that because nobody else in this market publishes theirs.
- Skyfield. The astronomy library that computes every position on this site.
- JPL planetary ephemerides. NASA JPL's ephemeris export page. The DE440s kernel we load is the source of every raw planetary position.
- Capitaine, Wallace and Chapront (2003), IAU 2006 precession. The precession expressions our Lahiri ayanamsa is carried forward with from its J2000 anchor.
- Positional Astronomy Centre, Kolkata. The India Meteorological Department office that publishes the Rashtriya Panchang, which defines the Lahiri ayanamsa.
- Swiss Ephemeris. The reference implementation we test against: under one arcsecond on every planet. It is used only in our test suite, never on this site.
Questions about panchang, for the day and the place you ask for
Why does your tithi differ from my wall calendar by one?
A tithi is not a day. It is the time the Moon takes to gain twelve degrees on the Sun, which is usually a bit less than a day, so a tithi can start and end at any hour. Printed calendars name the tithi running at sunrise, which is what we show, and they will occasionally differ from a calendar computed for another city.
Should I avoid doing things in Rahu Kaal?
Traditional practice avoids beginning new work in that window. It is custom rather than a claim we can put a mechanism behind, so we compute it correctly and leave the decision with you.
Can I use this for a muhurat?
It gives you the raw limbs a muhurat is chosen from, but choosing one properly also involves the chart of the person and the nature of the work. Treat this as the reference table, not the decision.
Which day does the panchang belong to?
The Hindu day runs sunrise to sunrise, not midnight to midnight, so the values here are the ones current at sunrise on the date you asked for.
