Your dasha periods, to the day
Vimshottari dasha is the Vedic clock: a hundred and twenty year cycle that says which planet is running your life at any given moment. This returns your whole sequence with real dates, three levels deep, and names the sub-period you are in today and the date it ends.
The dates are right. What the periods DO is chart specific.
Every Vimshottari calculator gives the same dates for the same birth minute, and they are correct. What none of them can give you is what Jupiter or Rahu means in YOUR chart, because that depends on where it sits, what it rules, what it is aspected by, and how many bindus the house it activates carries.
- What each running period does in your chart, area by area, not by textbook signification
- The sub-period table, dated to the day it changes, for the periods you are in now
- The years ahead ranked, so you know which ones to move in and which to sit through
- The condition of each period lord in your chart, with the working shown so an astrologer can check it
10 written sections, 10 years forward, about 29 minutes to read. Written in five to ten minutes, in English or Hinglish, and emailed to you.
Not ready to spend Rs 258 on a site you found today?
A table of dates proves we can do arithmetic, which is the easy half. The claim you should test is the interpretive one. Take the free reading, which is that interpretation applied to you, and judge us on it.
Whichever you start with, the Rs 79 is credited, so the full reading is Rs 179 afterwards and the total is the same either way. A price we quote you never goes up.
Already bought the back-cast? It comes off the price, so yours is Rs 179 + GST and it is one tap in your reports.
Why the third level is the useful one
A mahadasha can run sixteen or nineteen years, which is too coarse to act on. The antardasha narrows it to one or two years. The pratyantardasha narrows it to weeks or months, and that is the level at which a period stops being a description of an era and starts being a date you can put in a calendar. Most free tools stop at two levels.
Reading a period lord
Each lord carries a plain signification: Saturn is delay and consolidation, Jupiter is expansion and advice, Venus is comfort and partnership, Mars is force and conflict, Mercury is negotiation and paperwork, the Moon is mood and home, the Sun is authority and recognition, Rahu is ambition and foreign things, Ketu is withdrawal and endings. What each does in YOUR chart depends on where that planet actually sits, which is what the full reading covers.
How this is calculated
Positions come from Skyfield and the JPL DE440s ephemeris, with our own Lahiri ayanamsa referred to the mean equinox of date. Every planet agrees with Swiss Ephemeris to under one arcsecond, and the lunar node to under a tenth of one. We publish that because nobody else in this market publishes theirs.
- Skyfield. The astronomy library that computes every position on this site.
- JPL planetary ephemerides. NASA JPL's ephemeris export page. The DE440s kernel we load is the source of every raw planetary position.
- Capitaine, Wallace and Chapront (2003), IAU 2006 precession. The precession expressions our Lahiri ayanamsa is carried forward with from its J2000 anchor.
- Positional Astronomy Centre, Kolkata. The India Meteorological Department office that publishes the Rashtriya Panchang, which defines the Lahiri ayanamsa.
- Swiss Ephemeris. The reference implementation we test against: under one arcsecond on every planet. It is used only in our test suite, never on this site.
Questions about your dasha periods, to the day
What decides which dasha I am born into?
The exact longitude of your Moon inside its nakshatra. The nakshatra's ruling planet is your first mahadasha, and how far the Moon had already travelled through it decides how much of that period was already spent when you were born. This is why the Moon's position matters more than any other single number in the chart.
How accurate do my birth time and place need to be?
Less than you would think. The Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day, so an hour of error shifts your dasha start dates by a few weeks, not years. If your time is out by several hours, the periods will still be in the right order but the boundary dates will drift noticeably.
Is Vimshottari the only dasha system?
No, there are dozens. Vimshottari is the one nearly every practising Indian astrologer uses, and it is the one this product is built on, so it is the only one we compute. We would rather do one system properly than six approximately.
Can a dasha be predicted to the exact day?
The arithmetic gives an exact day, and we print it, but you should read the boundary as a few weeks rather than a morning. Periods hand over gradually and the honest unit here is the fortnight.
