Kaal Sarp Yoga is every one of the seven classical planets sitting on one side of the Rahu and Ketu axis. Either that is true of your chart or it is not, and it is a fact you can verify from the positions below. This page exists because a lot of tools report it loosely, and a lot of people have paid for remedies for something they do not have.

Kaal Sarp is the most profitable diagnosis in Indian astrology and the one most often applied to charts that do not have it. The check above is deterministic: either every planet sits between the nodes or it does not. What it cannot tell you is what the nodes are genuinely doing in your life, which is a different and more useful question.

Complete, partial, and neither
If even one planet falls outside the axis, the formation is not complete, and classical opinion on the partial case is divided rather than settled. We tell you which planets sit where instead of giving you a yes or a no with nothing behind it, so you can check the claim rather than take it.
What the classical texts actually attach to it
Obstruction and delay rather than disaster: things arriving later than they should, and effort producing less than it appears to deserve for a stretch. It is also common. A formation shared by a noticeable fraction of the population is not an explanation for a specific life.
How this is calculated
Positions come from Skyfield and the JPL DE440s ephemeris, with our own Lahiri ayanamsa referred to the mean equinox of date. Every planet agrees with Swiss Ephemeris to under one arcsecond, and the lunar node to under a tenth of one. We publish that because nobody else in this market publishes theirs.

- Capitaine, Wallace and Chapront (2003), IAU 2006 precession. The precession expressions our Lahiri ayanamsa is carried forward with from its J2000 anchor.
- Positional Astronomy Centre, Kolkata. The India Meteorological Department office that publishes the Rashtriya Panchang, which defines the Lahiri ayanamsa.
- Swiss Ephemeris. The reference implementation we test against: under one arcsecond on every planet. It is used only in our test suite, never on this site.

Do I need a puja for Kaal Sarp Dosh?
That is a personal and religious decision and we are not the right people to sell you one. What we will say is that you should not pay for a remedy for a formation you do not have, which is why this check is free and shows its working.
Which of the twelve types do I have?
The type is named after the house the Rahu and Ketu axis falls across, for instance Ananta, Kulika or Vasuki. Where the formation is complete we name it. Where it is not, the type is not meaningful.
Does the ascendant matter here?
For whether the formation exists, no: it depends only on the planets' positions relative to the nodes, so an approximate birth time is fine. For which type it is, yes, because the type is named from the houses.
Is Kaal Sarp in every chart at some point?
No, this is natal and permanent. Either the planets were arranged that way at your birth or they were not. Nothing about it comes and goes.
