Mangal Dosha checks Mars in the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house from the lagna, Moon and Venus. The part that decides whether it matters is the cancellation, and that is the part most free checkers leave out, which is why so many people believe they carry something they do not.
The useful answer is usually that it cancels.
Mangal Dosha is the single most oversold thing in Indian astrology. The classical texts cancel it in more cases than they apply it, and the check above tells you whether yours is one of them. What it cannot tell you is the thing you came for, which is when you marry and what the marriage looks like.

The cancellation is the answer
Classical texts cancel this dosha in several ordinary situations: Mars in its own sign or exalted, Jupiter joining or aspecting Mars, Saturn sitting with Mars. Any one of them changes the reading completely. We check all of them and print which ones fired, so you can take the result to an astrologer you trust and have them check our working.
What it is actually about
Read plainly, Mars in these houses describes heat brought into a marriage: impatience, a short fuse, a need to win the argument. It is a description of temperament, not a verdict on the marriage. Treating it as a verdict is how families end otherwise good matches.
How this is calculated
Positions come from Skyfield and the JPL DE440s ephemeris, with our own Lahiri ayanamsa referred to the mean equinox of date. Every planet agrees with Swiss Ephemeris to under one arcsecond, and the lunar node to under a tenth of one. We publish that because nobody else in this market publishes theirs.

- Capitaine, Wallace and Chapront (2003), IAU 2006 precession. The precession expressions our Lahiri ayanamsa is carried forward with from its J2000 anchor.
- Positional Astronomy Centre, Kolkata. The India Meteorological Department office that publishes the Rashtriya Panchang, which defines the Lahiri ayanamsa.
- Swiss Ephemeris. The reference implementation we test against: under one arcsecond on every planet. It is used only in our test suite, never on this site.
Questions about are you manglik, and does it still apply?
Can a Manglik marry a non Manglik?
This is a family and personal decision and we will not tell you it is forbidden. What the chart supports is narrower: where the dosha is cancelled, the classical objection is already answered on its own terms. Where it is not, what the placement describes is temperament, and temperament is something two people can discuss.
Why does another site say I am Manglik and you say I am not?
Almost always the house count or a cancellation rule. We count Mars from the lagna, Moon and Venus and print all three house numbers, so you can see exactly where another answer differs.
Does Mangal Dosha reduce with age?
The common view is that it weakens after about twenty eight, which is when Saturn first returns to its birth position. That is a claim about maturity rather than about Mars, and we would rather you read it that way than as a rule.
Do I need an exact birth time?
Yes, more than for most checks. Mars moves house when the ascendant does, which is roughly every two hours, so a birth time out by an hour can move Mars in or out of the set. The result below tells you how many minutes of birth time you have before your ascendant changes.
