Kundli Milan, and the working behind the number
Guna milan scores a match out of thirty six across eight kootas, and almost every site gives you the total and nothing else. This one prints what each koota was scored FROM: which varna, which yoni animal, which gana, which nadi, for both people, so you can take the sheet to an astrologer and have them check it rather than trust it.
Thirty six points tell you whether. They do not tell you when.
Guna milan scores compatibility from two Moons and nothing else. It cannot see when either of you marries, which years the relationship is under load, or what the running period is doing to it right now. Those come from the whole chart, and they are what people actually decide on.
- When marriage is indicated in your own chart, dated, with the sub-periods that carry it
- What the seventh house and its lord say about the partner and the shape of the marriage
- The years the relationship is under pressure, named as pressure and not as prediction
- Whether any dosha here actually cancels, and what you can stop worrying about
10 written sections, 10 years forward, about 29 minutes to read. Written in five to ten minutes, in English or Hinglish, and emailed to you.
Not ready to spend Rs 258 on a site you found today?
You have a score from a stranger's website and no reason to believe the rest of it. Fair. Everything above was computed, so check the cheaper thing first: we will describe windows from years you have already lived, and if we are wrong about your past you should not pay us anything about your future.
Whichever you start with, the Rs 79 is credited, so the full reading is Rs 179 afterwards and the total is the same either way. A price we quote you never goes up.
Already bought the back-cast? It comes off the price, so yours is Rs 179 + GST and it is one tap in your reports.
Eighteen is the threshold, and it is not a verdict
Below eighteen out of thirty six the classical position is that the match needs looking at properly, not that it is forbidden. Above twenty five is a strong match. What the number cannot tell you is anything about two specific people, and a family treating thirty two as a guarantee is making the same mistake as one treating sixteen as a sentence.
Why Nadi is worth eight and Varna is worth one
The weights are not decoration. Nadi alone can take eight points off a total, which is why so many matches fail on it, and Varna can only ever cost you one. If a match is short by a point or two, look at which kootas the loss came from before you conclude anything at all.
The doshas are reported, not silently applied
Nadi and Bhakoot dosha both have well known cancellations, and so does Mangal dosha. We compute the standard score, then tell you separately which cancellations apply to your two charts. We do not quietly add the points back, because then our total would differ from every other site on the same couple and would look like an error rather than a judgement.
How this is calculated
Positions come from Skyfield and the JPL DE440s ephemeris, with our own Lahiri ayanamsa referred to the mean equinox of date. Every planet agrees with Swiss Ephemeris to under one arcsecond, and the lunar node to under a tenth of one. We publish that because nobody else in this market publishes theirs.
- Skyfield. The astronomy library that computes every position on this site.
- JPL planetary ephemerides. NASA JPL's ephemeris export page. The DE440s kernel we load is the source of every raw planetary position.
- Capitaine, Wallace and Chapront (2003), IAU 2006 precession. The precession expressions our Lahiri ayanamsa is carried forward with from its J2000 anchor.
- Positional Astronomy Centre, Kolkata. The India Meteorological Department office that publishes the Rashtriya Panchang, which defines the Lahiri ayanamsa.
- Swiss Ephemeris. The reference implementation we test against: under one arcsecond on every planet. It is used only in our test suite, never on this site.
Questions about kundli milan, and the working behind the number
Is 18 out of 36 really enough?
It is the traditional threshold, and it is a floor rather than a target. Two things matter more than clearing it: which kootas the points were lost on, since Nadi and Bhakoot carry real weight and Varna carries almost none, and whether the two charts themselves agree, which guna milan does not look at.
Does the order of the two people matter?
Yes, and this surprises people. Varna, Vashya and Gana are asymmetric in the classical tables: a Deva bride with a Manushya groom scores six and the reverse scores five. Enter the bride as the bride.
What if we score zero on Nadi?
That is the biggest single deduction in the system and the one worth asking an astrologer about directly. There is a well known exception when the two Moon signs differ and the two birth stars differ, and we tell you below whether it applies to you. We do not add the eight points back ourselves.
Do we need exact birth times?
Less than for a full reading. Every koota is read from the Moon, and the Moon takes about two and a quarter days to change sign, so an hour either way rarely moves anything. The exception is a birth near a nakshatra boundary, where four of the eight kootas can change at once.
Should we call off a marriage over a low score?
We are not going to tell you that, and you should be wary of any site that does. This page computes a classical score and shows its working. What you do with it is between the two of you and whoever you trust to advise you.
